My journey: playing, coaching, and shaping quarterbacks

The most important thing to know about my background is that my approach to the quarterback position was shaped through years of playing and studying the game at a high level.

I was born and raised in Atlanta and graduated from Westlake High School before going on to play Division I college football. After college, I continued playing overseas, chasing my love of the game and the opportunity to keep competing. Along the way, I gained experience coaching at the high school level and working with developing quarterbacks, particularly at the middle school and early high school stages.

Playing and coaching in a talent-rich city like Atlanta also gave me firsthand experience with the recruiting landscape young athletes have to navigate.

What shaped my approach most, though, was realizing that quarterback is about much more than physical talent. Arm strength and athletic ability matter, but the position is really about understanding the game — your eyes, your decisions, your preparation, and your ability to evaluate and correct yourself.

My philosophy now is the same it has always been: learn the game, understand the “why” behind what you’re doing, and train your body so the fundamentals become automatic. When the pressure builds and the game speeds up, a quarterback should be able to rely on disciplined mechanics and sound habits.

That’s the foundation of how I train quarterbacks today.

My coaching philosophy: Thinking the Game

My coaching philosophy centers on teaching quarterbacks to truly understand the position.

Quarterback is one of the most mentally demanding positions in sports. It’s not just about arm strength, athletic ability, or making a highlight throw. It’s about processing information, understanding defenses, making disciplined decisions, and leading an offense with confidence.

My focus is on helping athletes learn the game from the inside out.

We start with fundamentals — stance, start, footwork, and throwing mechanics — and build a foundation that is repeatable and dependable. When pressure builds in a game, quarterbacks don’t rise to the moment; they fall back on their level of preparation. My goal is to make sure that level of preparation is high.

I want quarterbacks to understand why they are doing something, not just how to do it. We talk about what their eyes should see, how to evaluate their own performance, and how to correct mistakes. Developing those habits helps young quarterbacks become more confident, more coachable, and more prepared for the next level of the game.

This work isn’t about creating social media clips or chasing attention. It’s about passing down the knowledge of the position and helping the next generation of quarterbacks learn to play the game the right way.

If an athlete leaves here more disciplined, more thoughtful about the game, and more prepared for pressure, then the work is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Who benefits most: your path to high-level play

My ideal student-athletes are rising 6th through 12th graders who already have some in-game experience playing quarterback and are ready to take the next step in their development.

If your athlete is looking to elevate their skills, prepare for summer camps, and build a strong foundation before summer strength and conditioning begins, this training provides an opportunity to get ahead.

The focus is on refining fundamentals, understanding the strategic side of the game, and developing the discipline and mental toughness required to play the quarterback position well.

Coach Lew QB Skills & Development is designed for student-athletes who are serious about improving, committed to learning the position the right way, and willing to put in the work required to grow both physically and mentally as quarterbacks.
